What has been achieved?
On 1 September 2026, Waymo announced the start of public driverless rides in Denver, San Diego and Tampa, with access opening gradually. Its report describes preparation for local streets and engagement with local organisations and communities. A later publication separately discusses its plans for London. That distinction matters: a service available in particular American operating areas and preparation for another location are different stages. The concrete advance is a service used by members of the public under locally defined operating conditions.
Why does it matter?
For passengers, mobility begins with a simple question: how do I reliably reach the place I want to go? New services provide a reason to examine people’s habits and needs more closely. For us, that includes understandable information, an accessible first experience and ways to obtain help. People who maintain vehicles and organise services also shape the journey. The human perspective makes the technology tangible: what does a ride feel like, what works in everyday use, and whose needs still need more attention?
What remains open?
The reported launch covered specified cities, service areas and a gradually admitted group of riders. It does not establish availability in Germany or at arbitrary locations. Announcing a new location also does not mean that passenger service has already opened there. We make no blanket safety comparison or promise about an individual journey. For an actual trip, the provider’s current location and access information matters. This example shows autonomous mobility operating in practice within a defined geographical and operational setting.
