What has been achieved?

Skydio documents civilian drone use at Caltrans, including imagery for construction monitoring and bridge inspection. The aircraft collect images for people to examine and use. In September 2026, the company also introduced Asset Command, software intended to connect inspections with asset inventories and recurring inspection tasks. General availability was announced for early 2027. Our deployed classification refers to existing inspection applications. The new software is a separate announcement, extending the direction of travel from individual flights toward connected working processes.

Why does it matter?

An aerial perspective becomes useful through the people on the ground. What do they need to see? Which view is missing? Who needs to assess a change? We see these questions as a practical guide to using the technology. A team should be able to define the information it needs and how that information enters its daily work. Clear handovers between flight planning, capture and analysis matter. The opportunity is to give specialists an additional view of their task while involving their experience.

What remains open?

Autonomous flight features do not remove responsibility for a particular operation. Skydio’s engineering description includes a remote pilot in command. Operating conditions, suitable sites and applicable authorisations remain relevant. A good image also does not constitute a complete assessment of a bridge’s condition; that requires an appropriate professional process. This story concerns civilian infrastructure work and makes no general savings or safety promise from individual supplier examples. The September announcement of general availability for Asset Command remains a forward-looking statement by the manufacturer.
