Robot dogs / ALLY AI FRONTIER

In use

Robot dogs join the inspection rounds.

Spot collects inspection data along defined routes at POSCO. People determine what to inspect, review the measurements and decide what should happen next.

What has been achieved?

The four-legged robot Spot is already used for specific industrial inspections. Boston Dynamics describes how POSCO has inspected areas around a blast furnace since 2023: Spot follows recorded routes and collects thermal-camera measurements that the team examines in Orbit software. Research and maintenance staff jointly defined inspection points and workflows. Another manufacturer report describes deployment at Kirin Brewery. These examples show mobile data collection becoming part of existing plant operations, with defined tasks for both the robot and the people using its observations.

Why does it matter?

An additional view of a plant can support thoughtful collaboration. Employees know the sounds, changes and particular conditions of their site. Repeated measurements can give them another basis for judgement. We therefore find it useful to ask how that information reaches the team. Is it understandable? Does it support a specific decision? Is there time to investigate an anomaly? The interesting advance lies in the shared workflow. A robot becomes useful when its assignment fits the experience and needs of the people on site.

What remains open?

The reported deployments involve configured routes, suitable sensors and selected inspection tasks. They do not establish an ability to diagnose arbitrary problems. Deciding which observation matters and what action follows belongs within an accountable maintenance process. At POSCO, mobile measurements work alongside fixed sensors. Manufacturers describe specific sites; findings need checking before transferring them elsewhere. Better working conditions also need assessment with the people involved. A useful deployment begins with a clear task and people equipped to interpret the observations.
